Silent Shadows – Willow Ptarmigan
Limited Edition of 200, 24″ x 16″ – $150.00
Open Edition 10″ x 8″ – $30.00
The tundra in winter is silent, white and seemingly lifeless. Both male and female willow ptarmigan take on winter color with their black eyes, bill and tail feathers contrasting with their white plumage and the snow. Well camouflaged, a ptarmigan is all but invisible against the snow – its presence going undetected. When startled, it ruptures the silent air with the beating flurry of wings as it bursts upward upon exit. The rush of adrenalin causes one to feel a sudden warmth depicting life and gives one the realization that God’s creatures are truly beautiful in such a somnolent landscape.
In the composition, “Silent Shadows”, a willow ptarmigan sits motionless on the snow. Its feathers are puffed out to provide insulation against the cold. The light causes subtle shadings making the contours of plumage and snow varied. Such shadings add visual interest to white on white and to the fascinating study of the ptarmigan and surroundings.
