The dark sky lifted as the sun started shining through the openings in the clouds. The fog had cleared. The occasional snow squall had drifted through. Now, the sun bounced off the rocks melting snow around the patches of soil.
A sow and two cubs step ashore, water dripping from their fur. Their coats cling close revealing their true body size. As they shake off the water, each bear becomes encased in a halo of spray. The sun finishes drying the fur; the clusters of hair separate, and the soft textures of the coats puff out to move freely in the breeze. Having survived the winter, the cubs cuddle by their mother’s side and continue to enjoy the security of her presence and the warmth of her body. Relaxed, all relish the company of three.
In the drawing, “Three is Company”, three polar bears and three herring gulls share the proximity of the shoreline in a limitless land of water, ice, snow and rocks. The three gulls are inquisitive. Perhaps they hope to dine on some leftovers. The bears in slumber periodically raise their eyelids to check the whereabouts of their visitors. Soon the gulls will leave. Again, the mother bear with her cubs will delight in the company of three.
