Cougars are widely distributed and it is estimated that there are some twenty thousand in North America. Although they are rarely seen in the wild, next to mankind they are the most widely distributed land mammal in the western hemisphere. The cougar is a cat of one colour and blends into the surroundings without being easily seen. In Western Canada they are most plentiful in the forests of British Columbia and Alberta but are found along the treed river valleys of Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

In the composition, “Hanging Loose,” a cougar is resting at the edge of a cliff by standing on a lower branch and wrapping its upper body around the trunk of the tree. Relaxing the large cat “hangs loose” almost becoming one with the tree. With the intensity of focus that is pure cat, the cougar’s curiosity is awakened by the wind blowing, the branches moving, and a nearby twig cracking.
